spitzer. this is "viewpoint." first it was wisconsin. then indiana. now michigan is the latest midwestern state where republican governor is eviscerating the pouf of the unions. michigan today became the 24th state to enact so-called right-to-work laws. much like the michigan senate last week, along party lines the house approved right-to-work legislation which prohibits unions from requiring members to pay dus. without hesitation earlier this evening, governor snyder signed the bill into law. there is a simple reason that laws like the one signed earlier are bad policy and bad economics. there's nothing wrong with a tough negotiation between a governor and labor unions or between a ceo and his workers. economic reality has to drive such negotiations. when i was governor, i negotiated hard but change the rules so workers cannot be effectively represented by a union takes away a fundamental right of workers to be represented on matters central to their economic well-being. it is one thing to be tough in negotiations, it is quite another to destroy the capacity of the union to ne

[♪ theme music ♪] >> jennifer: let's start tonight in flint, michigan. the city about an hour north of detroit. this is my map of michigan and it's a place with a long list of dubious distinctions. it has the highest crime rate of any michigan city the highest number of abandoned properties in the nation and last year it was the number one most violent city in the country. it also is one of the poorest cities. compare that to michigan overall which is at 16%, the 14% is the national figure. it is a sad picture, even more so because of flint's history as the center of the american manufacturing industry. it's the birthplace of this country's labor movement. in 1960 flint was michigan's second largest city 200,000 people. it also had a vibrant middle class, it's public school system was a model for the nation and that was due in large part to the strength of its labor unions and the large number of manufacturing workers living in flint. they took over a factory and they didn't leave until they reached a deal with management. workers occupied several general motor's plants. not f

its rights in lansing, michigan. out in the cold voicing outrage on the steps of the statehouse over right to work legislation that governor rick snyder says he will be signing when it reaches his desk likely tomorrow. joining me now nbc's ron mott live in lansing. ron, what is the latest, and how did this come to a head so quickly in michigan? >> reporter: it came together very quickly, andrea. good day to you. it's a cold day out here, but these folks are very fired up. they don't like the way that this legislation was pushed through the statehouse here. they believe that this was a republican strategy to go through a lame-duck session. they know they've got a little more democratic leaning legislature coming here next month, and they figure that this was the most opportune time to push this legislation through. a very small window of time to actually debate the issue, and then as you mention, tomorrow governor snyder is expected to sign this into law, making michigan the 24th right to work state. i spoke with the head of the chamber here in michigan just a few moments ago. he says

state of michigan. but first, we take time out for today's current news update. lisa ferguson's got it out in los angeles. hi, lisa. good morning. >> hey bill. good morning everyone. americans are calling for a major overhaul of the republican party. especially when it comes to the g.o.p.'s pro rich policies. according to a new bloomberg national poll, 87% of people say it's time for some type of change. even support within the republican party is low. only 16% of g.o.p. members think their party is fine the way it is. nbc news "wall street journal" poll shows favorability is slipping. only 30% of those respondents see the party in a positive light. 45% say they don't approve. at issue here is the view of republicans as the party of the rich. voters say it is time to broaden the base and change what they value. some big topics include gay marriage immigration and abortion rights. if republicans are looking to change their stance on abortion, michigan isn't helping much. the state senate there just passed one of the country's most extreme abortion bans in a 27-10 vote. among other restr

"newsroom" starts right now. good morning, everybody. i'm ted rowlands in for carol costello today. lansing, michigan, is the target of a protest. the republicans are trying to push through a right to work bill that could severely hurt organized labor in the state. the governor promises to sign the bill as soon as it hits his desk which could be within hours. the new legislation bars requiring union dues as a condition of employment. it's already on the books in 23 other states. police an
